"In situations where a raft foundation alone does not satisfy the design requirements, it1 l2 t$ v1 y6 t% x
may be possible to enhance the performance of the raft by the addition of piles. The use
& b1 I6 F) B4 G  ?6 a) uof a limited number of piles, strategically located, may improve both the ultimate load/ ]; q! e, @; x
capacity and the settlement and differential settlement performance of the raft. This. J$ Z$ k) S7 k
paper outlines the development of a simplified method of analysis which can provide a4 E# y( a- X9 u# b+ |3 u
useful tool for preliminary design of piled raft foundations. It involves two phases:
0 }; k3 P# F+ t1 v# s- O1. The assessment of the overall foundation behavior;
8 a) d# Z0 a& ?/ D& H9 C# Z2. The assessment of the behavior under individual column loads.8 b% L% F5 y8 d8 ?; W
In both cases, use is made of simplified solutions to compute foundation stiffness- A" R0 N. D1 E" P5 z
and capacity characteristics. The selection of design geotechnical parameters is an
4 {- ^8 O+ {% @# y* @- }0 y+ Wessential component of both design stages, and some approximations for estimating the
