8 z5 U! ~7 E# {% o"In situations where a raft foundation alone does not satisfy the design requirements, it
- A" l8 r2 D, ^$ hmay be possible to enhance the performance of the raft by the addition of piles. The use- \& [5 `6 o, A! i
of a limited number of piles, strategically located, may improve both the ultimate load+ [- p3 Y+ D1 _3 u6 M' c" U$ C" n
capacity and the settlement and differential settlement performance of the raft. This* l; Q, f a8 W& d% Z9 u
paper outlines the development of a simplified method of analysis which can provide a: N i; H0 j+ Z% C( L. t
useful tool for preliminary design of piled raft foundations. It involves two phases:
! b0 v, U& D1 s9 b/ Y1. The assessment of the overall foundation behavior;3 @0 y" t+ c4 e# e, G3 Z1 U" g H
2. The assessment of the behavior under individual column loads." d' w: ?% m4 w0 ]; @4 }+ E7 F! T
In both cases, use is made of simplified solutions to compute foundation stiffness
" }+ M \/ C- S* y) Aand capacity characteristics. The selection of design geotechnical parameters is an; B* P( f& Z# A: m
essential component of both design stages, and some approximations for estimating the$ Z/ @9 ~" p2 [* R: V2 F7 _: w& \, o

Typical applications to a case history of a piled raft and to model centrifuge tests. k X2 N9 V1 g+ B" S
