may be possible to enhance the performance of the raft by the addition of piles. The use1 K9 z, A4 b/ U( h
of a limited number of piles, strategically located, may improve both the ultimate load( f: Z7 ~7 ?/ C* K
capacity and the settlement and differential settlement performance of the raft. This, t! a0 O9 _6 Y/ Q
paper outlines the development of a simplified method of analysis which can provide a

1. The assessment of the overall foundation behavior;

* {8 F2 {7 H8 q* ?9 aIn both cases, use is made of simplified solutions to compute foundation stiffness9 K K0 l( |2 p
and capacity characteristics. The selection of design geotechnical parameters is an
0 f& p& o+ h6 c( Y7 s0 bessential component of both design stages, and some approximations for estimating the( c8 R3 [# T+ h
necessary parameters are summarized.
