"In situations where a raft foundation alone does not satisfy the design requirements, it# |) N* {6 M7 c7 N
may be possible to enhance the performance of the raft by the addition of piles. The use
3 {! Y% S+ p4 j4 nof a limited number of piles, strategically located, may improve both the ultimate load+ c9 d0 Z+ _7 [
capacity and the settlement and differential settlement performance of the raft. This0 }1 @, x( b; @5 H$ v0 F2 l0 K
paper outlines the development of a simplified method of analysis which can provide a
V$ Q9 g8 o; k# Z) W3 r1 \useful tool for preliminary design of piled raft foundations. It involves two phases:
) c" T. ~- t* F+ C6 Q1. The assessment of the overall foundation behavior;$ s) h# k9 i! l: ^6 N- x
2. The assessment of the behavior under individual column loads.. f7 P$ G, Y1 k" B: r. w
In both cases, use is made of simplified solutions to compute foundation stiffness0 N- G" H1 a1 q# p0 `# O% a& c
and capacity characteristics. The selection of design geotechnical parameters is an
d+ p) L2 _5 n1 l2 kessential component of both design stages, and some approximations for estimating the( |; w% ~5 h; J. S& q" K$ L

Typical applications to a case history of a piled raft and to model centrifuge tests
