Abstract
# N4 |; Z- u4 A" o"In situations where a raft foundation alone does not satisfy the design requirements, it1 ^; z) p+ n* v
may be possible to enhance the performance of the raft by the addition of piles. The use% T6 W* N- G+ S1 \) u- H G3 [
of a limited number of piles, strategically located, may improve both the ultimate load
& ]% H J- N. j" f) \1 ]capacity and the settlement and differential settlement performance of the raft. This* E" h% V; a; }& j/ [# f A
paper outlines the development of a simplified method of analysis which can provide a
% b# U' A1 K7 o1 M" w6 h; museful tool for preliminary design of piled raft foundations. It involves two phases: R+ e5 P: U7 w( Y4 i' b
1. The assessment of the overall foundation behavior;
+ E/ F. M5 \, h! b+ N7 M! C# `2. The assessment of the behavior under individual column loads.! H" @# F1 R \" N: n) N9 g
In both cases, use is made of simplified solutions to compute foundation stiffness( E$ F+ n+ q( u
and capacity characteristics. The selection of design geotechnical parameters is an
. R! x# p, O8 Y* V: F! E; tessential component of both design stages, and some approximations for estimating the1 ]5 z7 x- H. |4 ~. [# g* l/ l
necessary parameters are summarized.6 V) L3 w9 M4 o. {% U
Typical applications to a case history of a piled raft and to model centrifuge tests$ b6 W) V5 E* `- t8 C
are described, and it is found that the behavior predicted by the simplified analysis is
